Hood College to Offer One-Year Environmental Biology Master’s Track

Starting in the fall of 2026, Hood College will introduce an accelerated 30-credit track for its Master of Science in Environmental Biology. The program allows students to complete their advanced degree in a single academic year, balancing intensive coursework with a mandatory faculty-mentored research internship.

The curriculum requires 24 credits of specialized environmental coursework before students transition into a six-credit capstone internship during the summer. This final phase focuses on the execution of an original research project, resulting in a scholarly paper intended to demonstrate practical proficiency in the field. By compressing the timeline, the college aims to provide working professionals and motivated students with a faster route to credentials without sacrificing research rigor.

Program director Eric Annis stated that the track is designed to prepare graduates for immediate professional contributions in sectors ranging from government agencies to environmental consulting firms. Beyond classroom theory, the program emphasizes the biological mechanisms essential for maintaining air, water, and land health. Applications for the inaugural cohort are currently being accepted through the institution's graduate admissions portal.
