Inside the Creation of Dolly Parton’s Immersive Nashville Museum

When the doors opened at Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel in Nashville this October, visitors stepped into more than just a gallery; they entered a 20,000-square-foot narrative space. AOA, the creative studio behind the project, spent two years transforming an office floor into a multisensory walk-through of the country icon's life.

The museum functions as a cohesive performance rather than a static collection. By weaving together over 300 artifacts—including Parton's wedding dress—with archival media and autobiographical narration, the design team aimed to make the space feel like a physical manifestation of the singer’s own memories. The layout tracks her trajectory from the Great Smoky Mountains to her global influence, utilizing custom lighting and perspective-corrected virtual technology to blur the lines between reality and digital display.

Converting the third floor of an existing office tower into a series of 20 distinct themed environments presented a significant structural challenge. The AOA team, working alongside Parton’s family members, including niece Rebecca Seaver and sister Rachel Parton George, prioritized emotional texture over traditional museum aesthetics. Every element, from the font choices on signage to the ambient background music, was calibrated to maintain a seamless atmosphere. The experience concludes with a high-tech virtual stage performance, ensuring the final interaction remains as personal as the early exhibits, effectively anchoring the museum as a centerpiece of the new 240-room SongTeller Hotel.
