Free users currently enjoy a selection of models including Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro, but that menu is shrinking. Following the update, the free tier will be restricted to the Flash Lite model alone. Those seeking the standard Flash experience must now commit to a $4.99 monthly Google AI Plus subscription.
Google Restricts Free Access to Top-Tier Gemini Models
Starting October 9, Google will overhaul its Gemini subscription tiers, stripping free users of access to the standard Flash model. The company is funneling users toward a tiered payment structure, reserving its most capable reasoning engines for those willing to pay up to $99.99 per month for premium service.
This shift also impacts existing subscribers. The $4.99 plan is losing its access to the Gemini Pro model, a change Google intends to communicate via email to affected users. To access Gemini Pro or the new “Deep Think” advanced reasoning capabilities, customers must upgrade to either the $19.99 Google AI Pro or the $99.99 Ultra subscription. While users retain control over effort levels—low, medium, or high—selecting higher intensities will deplete usage limits at an accelerated rate.
