The two-stage qualification process assessed vehicle-based systems across controlled test fields in Düsseldorf and an active 50-kilometer gas distribution network in Regensburg. While participants were required to meet a 90% detection threshold, Picarro surpassed this with a 96% success rate during the controlled phase. In the real-world operational validation, the company was the only participant to identify all 10 methane events, confirming the reliability of its survey methodology.
Picarro Leads in German Methane Detection Research Project
Ten out of ten: Picarro’s mobile leak detection technology achieved a perfect detection rate during the rigorous FaMeGQ research project in Germany. By identifying all controlled releases and two previously unknown leaks in a live distribution network, the system outperformed five other competitors in the DVGW-funded evaluation.

The findings validate Picarro’s specific approach to atmospheric analytics, which utilizes nighttime surveys and multiple front-mounted sampling nozzles. According to the DVGW report, these techniques, alongside automated data quality control, are essential for maintaining safety standards. As European utilities face stricter mandates under EU Regulation 2024/1787, this independent verification highlights how mobile technology can assist operators in scaling network inspections while meeting compliance requirements for methane emissions reporting.
