Quantinuum and UWA Partner to Accelerate Australia’s Quantum Economy

Quantinuum and The University of Western Australia have signed a memorandum of understanding to integrate quantum computing into the nation’s research and industrial sectors. The collaboration grants students and researchers cloud-based access to the Helios quantum computer to develop hybrid AI-HPC workflows for critical industries like energy and healthcare.

The partnership aims to bridge the gap between theoretical quantum discovery and practical application. By leveraging Quantinuum’s full-stack platform, UWA-affiliated researchers and entrepreneurs will gain hands-on experience with trapped-ion technology. The initiative serves as a cornerstone for a proposed university-wide quantum applications centre, designed to foster collaboration between academic, government, and industry stakeholders.

Dr. Marvin Lee, country leader at Quantinuum, noted that the move aligns with Australia's national quantum vision, focusing on building high-value use cases for sectors such as critical minerals and agriculture. Beyond hardware access, the collaboration integrates Quantinuum’s global training programs, including Q-Net and the Startup Partner Program, to cultivate local technical talent. Professor Jingbo Wang, director of UWA’s QUISA centre, emphasized that this co-design approach will create new pathways for interdisciplinary research and workforce development, ensuring that Australia remains at the forefront of the quantum-AI-HPC era.
