Traditional Medicinals Opens $47 Million Facility in Virginia

A 110,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Franklin County has officially begun tea production, marking a strategic shift toward bicoastal operations for the botanical wellness brand. The $47 million site serves as the company’s first expansion outside its original California headquarters, aiming to streamline distribution and meet rising national demand.

The new facility, situated in the Summit View Business Park, represents a deliberate investment in local infrastructure and labor. By hiring exclusively from the surrounding area, the company has created 19 initial jobs while prioritizing regional partnerships for construction and design. The site serves as a model for modern sustainable manufacturing, operating as an all-electric facility that avoids on-site fossil fuels and utilizes advanced bioswales for water filtration.

Production has commenced with the brand’s popular Throat Coat tea, a choice reflecting the company’s connection to the region through the sourcing of slippery elm from Appalachia. This effort is bolstered by a research partnership with Virginia Tech, underscoring a commitment to local supply chains. While the Sebastopol, California, plant continues to operate at capacity, the Virginia location provides a critical logistical advantage for the company’s ethical sourcing network, which spans over 35 countries. The project, which broke ground in July 2025, is projected to generate $62 million in economic impact for the region over the coming years.
