Trump Administration Scales Back Federal Fuel Efficiency Standards

The U.S. Department of Transportation has finalized a rule gutting federal fuel efficiency requirements, effectively abandoning the Biden-era mandate that aimed for 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031. The new directive locks in a target of 34.9 miles per gallon, a modest increase from the 30.1 standard set for 2024.

The administration frames this move as a significant deregulatory victory, projecting that lowering these requirements will reduce new vehicle costs by $1,300. Officials estimate a total savings of $138 billion over the next five years, though these figures face sharp scrutiny from independent analysts. While major automakers have largely welcomed the policy shift as a reprieve from aggressive regulatory pressure, the decision has ignited a fierce backlash from environmental and public health organizations.

Critics contend the rollback is a fiscal and ecological liability that shifts the financial burden onto consumers. By reducing efficiency, opponents argue that drivers will face higher long-term fuel costs, while the public at large contends with elevated healthcare expenses linked to increased air pollution. Harold Wimmer, CEO of the American Lung Association, condemned the policy as a reversal of decades of progress. He emphasized that the previous, more stringent standards were technologically achievable and provided essential protections for public health and air quality.
