Ameren Missouri unveils two-decade roadmap for grid reliability

The 2026 Integrated Resource Plan, developed by the utility subsidiary of Ameren Corporation, prioritizes a mix of technologies to ensure consistent service across changing economic conditions. The strategy emphasizes the necessity of long-term planning, with the company opting for a preferred portfolio selected from over 20 distinct scenarios to maintain flexibility against future uncertainty.

Key investments include a massive expansion of natural gas capacity, with 2,100 megawatts scheduled by 2031 and further additions through 2042. To complement these resources, Ameren plans to integrate 1,300 megawatts of solar by 2030, alongside 2,400 megawatts of battery storage to address peak usage periods. Beyond renewables, the company is evaluating 1,200 megawatts of new nuclear generation by 2040 and seeking to extend the operating life of the Callaway Energy Center beyond 2044. According to Ameren Missouri president Aaron Melda, the diversified approach is essential because no single technology can independently meet the evolving needs of the grid.
