Prevent Blindness Mobilizes National Push for World Sight Day
With the October 8 World Sight Day approaching, Prevent Blindness is launching a nationwide campaign to bolster eye health advocacy and access. The organization, in partnership with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, aims to promote the global "Love Your Eyes" theme through screenings and legislative action.
The initiative features a blend of public health outreach and professional development. Prevent Blindness will host certified vision screenings across the country, supported by funding from Amgen and Alkeus Pharmaceuticals. On the clinical front, Children's Wisconsin and the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health are launching the "Safeguarding Sight" lecture series, a free program designed to sharpen the pediatric diagnostic skills of community optometrists.
Legislative efforts remain a central pillar of the 2026 activities. The organization is rallying over 115 partners to support the Early Detection of Vision Impairments for Children (EDVI) Act. Led by Representatives Gus Bilirakis and Marc A. Veasey, the bipartisan bill seeks to establish the first federal program dedicated to pediatric eye health. During the upcoming congressional recess, Prevent Blindness will deploy a "grasstops" campaign to pressure lawmakers to cosponsor the legislation.
Educational resources are also expanding, with a new toolkit developed alongside the National Association of School Nurses to assist teachers and parents. These efforts coincide with Delta Gamma’s "Do Good Week," which runs from October 8 to 15, further extending the reach of eye health awareness. Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, noted that the day serves as a critical junction for aligning public education with policy change to ensure vision remains a priority at every level of care.
