Alteogen Inks $3.2 Billion Licensing Deal with Novartis

Novartis has secured rights to deploy Alteogen’s proprietary Hybrozyme™ technology across its drug pipeline, aiming to transition intravenous treatments into subcutaneous formulations. The agreement marks a significant expansion for the South Korean firm, potentially netting them up to $3.22 billion if all development milestones and sales targets are met.

The partnership centers on ALT-B4, a recombinant human hyaluronidase enzyme that allows patients to receive medications via injection rather than lengthy IV infusions. By temporarily modifying the extracellular matrix, the technology accelerates drug absorption, offering a more convenient administration route for patients. Under the contract, Novartis gains multiple options to apply this platform to a range of its internal therapeutic products.

This deal represents the fourth licensing agreement for Alteogen this year, underscoring the growing industry demand for subcutaneous delivery systems. CEO Tae-Yon Chun noted that Novartis’ decision to integrate the platform across various modalities validates the commercial utility of the Hybrozyme™ tech. Should the collaboration progress through all phases, Alteogen will collect a combination of exercise fees, development bonuses, and ongoing royalties on net product sales.
