American Lung Association Expands Free Support for Pulmonary Fibrosis

As September marks Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month, the American Lung Association is scaling up its free support initiative for those navigating the progressive lung disease. The program provides patients and caregivers with direct access to specialized health navigators to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Pulmonary fibrosis, a condition characterized by scarring in lung tissue, presents significant diagnostic and management challenges. With over 200 distinct types identified—ranging from those linked to environmental exposures to idiopathic forms with no known cause—patients often face a complex medical journey. While no cure exists, current treatments focus on slowing disease progression through oxygen therapy, medication, and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Supported by the Feldman Family Foundation, the "Learning to Live with PF" program addresses the information gap between clinical visits and daily life. The initiative connects patients with registered nurses and respiratory therapists who provide personalized guidance via phone, chat, or video. Beyond human support, the program offers a comprehensive 50-page workbook and access to a nationwide patient network, helping families navigate insurance hurdles, clinical trials, and communication strategies with their healthcare teams. Those seeking assistance can enroll through Lung.org/navigator or by calling 866-252-2959.
