The project serves as a showcase for the Beauty of Block initiative, which seeks to reframe how builders view concrete masonry in residential spaces. Old Dominion Block, Brick & Hardscapes supplied roughly 5,700 units to the site, allowing the design to incorporate honed block walls in the great room and deep-set window openings. Beyond the visual character, the masonry build offers inherent resistance to fire, rot, and termites, while providing superior thermal mass to help moderate interior temperatures.
Lynchburg Dream Home Shifts to Concrete Masonry for St. Jude Giveaway
For the first time in its 35-year history, the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is moving away from traditional light-frame construction. The new 2,900-square-foot residence in Lynchburg’s Blackwater Run neighborhood features a primary structural system of concrete masonry units, aiming to merge long-term residential durability with modern aesthetic appeal.
Transitioning from the original light-frame plans required close coordination between the Beauty of Block Design Collective and local builder L.G. Flint. Despite facing winter weather delays, the switch to masonry proved unexpectedly efficient. According to L.G. Flint president Andy Flint, early integration allowed crews to recover lost time, eventually pulling the project one to two weeks ahead of the original schedule even during single-digit temperatures. The finished home remains open for public tours until September 13, with the final giveaway event scheduled for September 23.
