Activity around the Moon is accelerating, with more than 400 missions planned over the next two decades. This surge is driven by the confirmation of water ice at lunar poles, plummeting launch costs, and new procurement models that mimic the commercial evolution of low Earth orbit. Deloitte identifies transportation as the primary engine of early growth, estimating it could account for $206 billion of the total economic value under an accelerated growth scenario.
Building this economy relies on six foundational pillars: transportation, power generation, communications and navigation, surface mobility, construction, and life support. While these systems remain the immediate priority, the report highlights that downstream markets—ranging from lunar data services and national security to in-space manufacturing—will only materialize once core infrastructure is established. Brett Loubert, leader of Deloitte’s space practice, emphasizes that this shift turns lunar exploration into an infrastructure story, creating openings for companies in robotics, energy, and logistics.
