Gertzog is no stranger to the inner workings of the society. Having joined ASH in 2003, he served as its first chief operating officer and later as deputy executive director. Since 2019, he has led the ASH Research Collaborative, where he focused on data-driven discovery and the Fight4Hematology campaign. Robert S. Negrin, ASH president and professor of medicine at Stanford University, noted that the executive committee’s decision reflects a desire for both institutional continuity and strategic evolution.
Matthew Gertzog to Lead American Society of Hematology
After three decades of leadership, Martha Liggett is stepping down as executive director of the American Society of Hematology. Her successor, Matthew Gertzog, will take the helm on January 1, 2027, tasked with guiding the organization through its next phase of global expansion and advocacy for blood disease research.
Liggett’s tenure, which began in 1996, oversaw a massive transformation of the organization. Under her guidance, the society shifted from a managed operation to a self-sustaining entity, with its annual budget climbing from $5.5 million to over $130 million. She also expanded the staff from four individuals to approximately 170. To ensure a stable transition, Liggett will remain as CEO emerita through June 2027, supporting Gertzog as he assumes his new responsibilities.
