Sujee Dasanayaka built Broadscope around people and trust
After arriving in Australia from Sri Lanka, Sujee Dasanayaka worked two jobs to support himself and his family back home. Fifteen years in the cleaning industry later, he founded Broadscope Facility Services in 2020; within five years, it had grown into an eight-figure business.
Dasanayaka began with a full-time job from 7am to 3pm, then supervised school cleaning crews from 4pm. He says the work gave him practical knowledge of the industry and helped him see where businesses needed more than traditional cleaning services.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when cleaning was an essential service, he launched Broadscope as a facilities management partner. The company invested in technology and systems to help solve client problems and improve efficiency. Dasanayaka also focused on building a team that could grow with the business.
Rather than pursue growth at any cost, Broadscope aimed to win repeat work through reliable service and long-term client relationships. Dasanayaka says staff are encouraged to take ownership, make decisions and identify issues before they become problems. The company’s employees, he says, are central to the trust it has built with clients.
As the business expanded, Dasanayaka shifted away from a founder-dependent model. Broadscope strengthened its leadership team, assigned managers clear accountability and decision-making authority, and improved financial controls, reporting, operational systems and performance management. He says the changes were needed to let the company operate successfully beyond its founder.
Dasanayaka now says the next stage is about making Broadscope stronger, more mature and sustainable, not simply increasing revenue. He describes success as creating opportunities for others, providing stability for employees and delivering value to clients. His message to other entrepreneurs: “Your starting point doesn’t have to define your destination.”
