Against the backdrop of record-breaking European heatwaves, pharmaceutical leaders and academics convened in Zurich for the 3rd Green Chemistry Symposium. The event served as a high-level forum to transition sustainable practices from theoretical research into industrial-scale manufacturing, targeting everything from carbon footprints to complex peptide synthesis.

The symposium, hosted by PharmaBlock, drew representatives from Novartis, Pfizer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sanofi, and AstraZeneca. Dr. Minmin Yang, founder and CEO of PharmaBlock, framed green chemistry as a fundamental driver of competitiveness rather than a peripheral environmental initiative. Discussions centered on the shift toward continuous flow manufacturing, a method proven to enhance process safety while significantly lowering solvent consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Technical sessions explored the convergence of photochemistry, AI-assisted process development, and electrochemistry to streamline reaction discovery. A specific focus was placed on green peptide manufacturing, where bio-based solvents and enzymatic ligation are replacing traditional, resource-heavy techniques. Beyond the lab, the conversation shifted to supply chain accountability, with experts advocating for the integration of carbon performance metrics into early-stage process development rather than treating them as post-production reporting.

Professor Erick M. Carreira of ETH Zurich underscored the necessity of bridging the gap between academic breakthroughs and industrial application. To bolster this collaboration, PharmaBlock officially inaugurated its Swiss Green-Tech Innovation Hub in the city. This new facility aims to serve as a regional anchor for continuous flow technologies, allowing the company to deepen its partnerships with European firms and research institutions as they work to modernize the global pharmaceutical supply chain.
