The settlement, overseen by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, concludes a multi-year legal battle regarding product liability. While Pfizer denies any wrongdoing, the company opted to settle to avoid the escalating costs and unpredictability of ongoing litigation. The court has not issued a ruling on the merits of the allegations, but the agreement now provides a mechanism for affected parties to seek compensation.
Pfizer Reaches $44 Million Settlement in Chantix Class Action
Individuals and third-party payors who purchased the smoking cessation drug Chantix between September 2015 and September 2021 are now eligible to file for a share of a $44 million settlement. The agreement resolves claims that Pfizer sold medication containing undisclosed levels of nitrosamine, though the company maintains it acted lawfully.
To participate, eligible claimants must submit a valid claim form with supporting documentation online or by mail no later than September 14, 2026. Awards will be distributed on a pro rata basis, with consumer payouts capped at 20% of the total fund. Remaining funds will be allocated to third-party payors. Those who do not wish to participate must formally opt out by the September deadline to retain their right to pursue independent legal action against the manufacturer. A final fairness hearing is scheduled for October 13, 2026.
