ChatGPT logs fail to sway jury in Palisades arson trial

Prosecutors built their case against Jonathan Rinderknecht on a digital trail of iPhone location data, security footage, and his own ChatGPT history. Yet, when presented with the defendant’s AI-generated fire imagery and erratic chatbot rants, jurors remained unconvinced, ultimately deadlocking 10-2 in favor of the defense.

The trial, stemming from a devastating wildfire on New Year’s Day 2025, ended in a mistrial after the jury rejected the prosecution’s reliance on digital personality profiling. Investigators highlighted queries where Rinderknecht asked the chatbot about fire liability and ranted against the wealthy, attempting to frame the interactions as evidence of intent or a dangerous psychological state.

However, the strategy backfired. One juror, identified as Syrina, told CBS LA that the reliance on AI logs felt disconnected from the gravity of the charges. She described the prosecution's attempt to use chatbot habits as a character flaw as an aggravating factor that undermined their credibility. With the jury split and no consensus reached, the court declared a hung jury, leaving the case against Rinderknecht in limbo.
