Apple Shifts Silicon Roadmap with M6 Strategy Change

Apple is breaking its established release cadence for Mac silicon, skipping Pro and Max variants for the upcoming M6 chip. According to a report by Mark Gurman, the company plans to consolidate its high-end development efforts toward a more significant technological leap with the M7 architecture, which is not expected until 2027.

Apple Shifts Silicon Roadmap with M6 Strategy Change

This departure from the standard release cycle represents the first time the company has omitted Pro and Max versions of a processor since the introduction of the M1. By focusing on a base model M6 scheduled for late this year, Apple aims to accelerate the deployment of advanced on-device AI capabilities slated for the M7 series.

For power users, this creates a potential gap in the hardware pipeline. With the base M6 lacking high-performance configurations, the upcoming M5 Ultra—expected in a new Mac Studio release later this year—will serve as the primary upgrade path for professional-grade devices in the near term. The full M7 lineup, including Pro, Max, and Ultra iterations, is projected to arrive between early 2027 and 2028.
