Boston 250 Commemoration Hits the Streets with Student-Designed Bikes

Two hundred and fifty Bluebikes, the Greater Boston bike-share fleet, have been outfitted with custom artistic wraps to mark America’s 250th anniversary. The initiative, spearheaded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, combines public art with ride incentives to encourage residents to engage with citywide summer festivities.

The project features three distinct designs, two of which were commissioned through a partnership with students from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) and UMass Boston. Rafaela Astudillo, a 2026 UMass Boston graduate, created a visual narrative centered on local neighborhoods and historic maps to represent healthy communities. Connor O'Malley, a MassArt communication design graduate, drew inspiration from the environmental evolution of the Boston Harbor for his contribution. The third design, focusing on personal health, was developed by the Blue Cross in-house creative team.

To facilitate attendance at major events such as the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular and the arrival of the Tall Ships, the sponsor is offering a series of free ride credits. Users can unlock $5 credits throughout the summer by entering specific codes in the Bluebikes app, while those who photograph the limited-edition bikes and share them on social media platforms may qualify for a $25 reward. The fleet, which includes 150 ebikes and 100 classic bikes, will remain in circulation across 13 municipalities through mid-August, bridging the gap between historical commemoration and active urban transit.
