Apple pushes to turn Siri into a more capable AI agent

Apple is accelerating work on Siri as it tries to close the gap with rival AI assistants. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that CEO John Ternus is pressing AI chief Craig Federighi to move faster on a more powerful assistant, though Apple recognizes its current effort is not keeping pace with competitors.

Two upgrades are expected in the coming months. With iOS 27.3, Siri is expected to gain more precise control of Apple’s own apps, including the ability to rotate and crop images in Photos and organize Safari tabs. A broader integration with third-party apps is likely to arrive later, in the spring, Gurman says. It could let users order through Grubhub or book a dinner reservation with OpenTable.

Apple’s longer-term aim is to make Siri handle continuing objectives rather than only one-off requests. Gurman says assistants such as OpenAI’s Dots, Meta’s Muse and Grok can track goals, work out what needs to happen next and keep pursuing tasks without requiring users to prompt every step. Apple wants to move Siri in that direction, he reports, and could make it more agent-like as early as next year.
