The slowdown in paid clicks—dipping from 13 percent to 8 percent—highlights the friction between Google’s AI makeover and its core advertising business. Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler attributed the shift to currency fluctuations and industry-specific spending, yet conceded that AI-generated queries currently monetize at lower rates than standard search results. While Google maintains that AI Mode queries are largely incremental, the transition threatens to disrupt a model that has defined the company’s dominance for decades.
Industry analysts see this as a fundamental hurdle rather than a temporary glitch. Nate Elliott of eMarketer notes that the shift in how users consume information directly impacts the ad-funded ecosystem. While Google is actively testing ad placements within AI Overviews and the Gemini app, the effectiveness of these formats remains unproven. Advertisers, meanwhile, are seeing steady returns, but they currently lack the granular data to distinguish how much of that performance is driven by traditional search versus AI experiments.
