Microsoft’s Xbox Nano controller to feature direct cloud connectivity

A hidden Wi-Fi capability within the upcoming Xbox Nano controller promises to bypass standard input lag by linking directly to Microsoft’s cloud gaming servers. While the company has kept this functionality quiet ahead of tomorrow’s launch, the feature mirrors the architecture once employed by Google’s defunct Stadia platform.

The Nano will utilize a pairing process through the Xbox mobile app to establish a dedicated connection to cloud servers. This bypasses the traditional Bluetooth or wired bridge to a console or PC, cutting down on the latency that often plagues high-speed streaming. Though the feature is currently undergoing private testing on the updated Xbox Cloud Gaming website, it remains a preview-stage offering. Support is expected to expand eventually to smart TVs and web browsers.

This shift toward direct-to-cloud hardware has been in the works for some time. Initial reports suggested that a refresh of the Xbox Series X, internally codenamed Sebile, was intended to debut this technology before the hardware plans were scrapped. With the Nano now leading this push, the upcoming Xbox Elite 3 controller is also expected to adopt similar Wi-Fi connectivity to maintain a competitive edge in the streaming space.
