Reddit CEO: Google AI Search Is Starving Sites of Traffic

Search traffic to Reddit has plummeted by over one million referrals per week since October, a downturn CEO Steve Huffman blames squarely on Google’s shift toward AI-generated search results. Huffman argues that the search giant’s new AI modes have fundamentally altered the internet ecosystem by keeping users within Google’s own interface.

During Reddit’s Q3 2026 earnings call, Huffman declared that AI-driven search features offer no reciprocal benefit to publishers. Instead of serving as a gateway to external platforms, these tools now push organic search results further down the page. Huffman noted that while Google continues to scrape Reddit’s data just as aggressively as before, it no longer directs the same volume of human visitors to the site.

Beyond domestic traffic losses, Reddit is seeing a decline in visibility for machine-translated content in international markets. Despite these headwinds, the platform remains a top search term, suggesting that user demand for Reddit’s community-driven discussions remains robust. To mitigate the reliance on search referrals, the company is pivoting its strategy to foster a more habitual, direct-access user base. Meanwhile, Google faces its own pressures, recently acknowledging that AI-integrated search results are currently yielding lower ad monetization compared to traditional search formats.
