Microsoft Retires Copilot Features from Smart TVs

Users of LG and Samsung smart TVs are losing access to Microsoft’s AI assistant as the company pivots away from home entertainment integration. An on-screen notification recently confirmed that Copilot functionality will be phased out across all television platforms throughout 2026, marking a swift retreat from the living room market.

The discontinuation arrives less than two years after the initial launch at CES 2025. According to an alert appearing on webOS-powered LG displays, the feature is scheduled for a total shutdown, though Microsoft has yet to set a precise expiration date. This shift follows a period of friction between manufacturers and their customer base, notably when LG faced significant backlash last December for forcing an unremovable Copilot shortcut onto user home screens.

While the assistant was marketed as an interactive companion capable of answering questions about on-screen content or providing viewing recommendations, Microsoft’s strategy has visibly shifted. The company recently consolidated its AI portfolio into a single "super app" focused heavily on productivity, coding, and business workflows. By stripping the tool from televisions, Microsoft effectively signals that its AI ambitions are moving away from casual living room interaction and toward professional-grade utility.
