The Diagnostic Orchestrator, built by Microsoft, functions by deploying multiple AI agents to analyze symptoms, review medical histories, and order necessary tests. This process mimics the investigative workflow of a medical expert rather than relying on simple pattern recognition. In a comparative study, the system reached an 80 percent accuracy rate on emergency department cases from Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, while human clinicians averaged 47 percent.
Despite these results, the technology remains in a research phase. The system has only been evaluated against historical data, leaving its performance in live clinical settings unproven. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman emphasized that the tool requires rigorous clinical validation before any broad deployment. The company plans to initiate pilot programs at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the coming months to assess real-world efficacy.
