The retailer has developed an 'Agent Gateway' utilizing the Model Context Protocol, an open standard designed to let AI interact with services without the friction of traditional browser navigation. By funneling these connections through this gateway, Walmart claims it can restrict an agent's access, ensuring the software sees only the data necessary to complete a purchase rather than a user’s entire shopping history or personal profile.
Walmart Opens Its Digital Doors to AI Shopping Agents
While Amazon actively blocks automated shoppers from its platform, Walmart is moving in the opposite direction. Starting next month, the retail giant will allow customers to connect their own AI agents to its website, provided these digital assistants adhere to strict new safety protocols and spending limitations.

To maintain control, Walmart is implementing dedicated 'Agent Profiles' within individual customer accounts. Users can set specific spending caps or require manual approval for every transaction. The system is designed to prevent agents from altering payment methods or executing actions outside the customer's clear intent. If an agent violates these terms, the company intends to revoke its access. This initiative will extend to Sam’s Club, marking a significant divergence from competitors like Amazon, which recently moved to wall off its site from third-party shopping assistants.
