The ROSA platform relies on preoperative CT scans to generate a 3D model of a patient’s shoulder, allowing surgeons to map out the procedure before entering the operating room. During the surgery, the system provides real-time navigation and feedback, which helps validate the placement of implants. This level of technical oversight is particularly vital for cases involving bone loss or glenoid socket deformities, where minor miscalculations can compromise long-term mobility and function.
Long Beach Medical Center Debuts Robotic Shoulder Replacement Technology
Surgeons at the MemorialCare Orthopedic & Spine Institute have completed the first robotic-assisted shoulder replacement in South Los Angeles County. By utilizing the ROSA Shoulder System, the medical team aims to solve long-standing challenges in implant positioning and patient-specific anatomical alignment for complex joint procedures.

Dr. Shahryar Ahmadi, an orthopedic surgeon at the institute, noted that retrospective data frequently highlights malpositioning of humeral and glenoid components in traditional arthroplasty. By integrating robotic assistance for reaming and resection, surgeons can execute complex steps with heightened accuracy while maintaining full manual control over the procedure. This addition to the Long Beach Medical Center facility marks a strategic effort to ensure residents in the South Bay area have access to advanced orthopedic interventions without the need to travel outside their immediate community.
