The Connected Aging in Place partnership targets federally subsidized housing, specifically USDA Rural Development and HUD Section 202 communities. By integrating wireless call-for-aid buttons and professional home modification assessments, the program shifts rural healthcare from reactive emergency treatment to proactive, stable infrastructure.
Kansas Rural Seniors Gain High-Tech Safety Net Through $300,000 Grant
With over 70% of seniors in Wilson County living alone, a new $300,000 initiative is replacing outdated pull-cord systems with 24/7 digital monitoring and virtual occupational therapy. The program, funded by the Patterson Family Foundation, aims to curb high rates of avoidable emergency room transports in rural Kansas.

Wilson County faces a critical lack of local health resources, as a single agency serves a population where nearly 63% of seniors report disabilities. Each avoidable emergency transport currently costs roughly $2,204, a financial burden the program seeks to alleviate by catching health declines before they trigger a crisis. Building on a pilot that demonstrated a 27% reduction in rehospitalizations, the initiative will provide 100 residents with expert occupational therapy evaluations and up to $2,000 in adaptive equipment installations over the next year.
