For over a decade, this forum has served as a critical nexus for aligning healthcare infrastructure with the specific needs of Arizona’s indigenous populations. This year’s sessions moved beyond general policy, focusing heavily on maternal and behavioral health, workforce development, and the integration of traditional healing practices into modern care models. Heather Carter, CEO of AZ Blue Health Choice, emphasized that these partnerships are the primary vehicle for creating sustainable, community-led health solutions.
Arizona Tribal Summit Targets Systemic Health Barriers
In Flagstaff this October, more than 200 tribal leaders, educators, and healthcare providers convened for the 13th Annual Tribal Summit to confront geographic isolation and provider shortages. The gathering, titled "Unity in Action," prioritized long-term collaboration to address health disparities and expand access to culturally responsive care across the state.
AZ Blue Health Choice currently supports members across 17 tribal nations, moving away from centralized service models toward localized initiatives. Recent efforts include direct food distribution, the expansion of telehealth, and the Traditional Practitioner Program, which formally incorporates traditional healers into the care ecosystem. By prioritizing these community-specific approaches, the organization aims to bridge the gap between historical health inequities and accessible, modern medical resources.
