The Shanghai Abend reception showcased the city’s intangible cultural heritage, highlighting how the connection has matured since its inception. Diego Hu, vice-president of Yuyuan Inc, pointed to the Hamburg replica of Shanghai's Yuyuan Garden as a vital platform for cross-cultural understanding, noting that the site draws approximately 200,000 visitors annually. This physical space serves as a tangible bridge, fostering public interest in Chinese traditions.
Shanghai and Hamburg Celebrate Four Decades of Partnership
Four decades of collaboration between Shanghai and Hamburg reached a milestone this month as city officials gathered in Germany to mark the anniversary of their friendship. From initial business ties to deep cultural and academic exchanges, the relationship has evolved into a strategic partnership defined by mutual learning and trust.

Stefan Matz, director of international investments for Hamburg Invest, emphasized that the partnership is no longer one-sided. He observed that European cities are increasingly looking to China for cooperation and shared expertise. Corinna Nienstedt, from the Hamburg senate chancellery, echoed this sentiment, noting that the relationship shifted from a mentor-mentee dynamic to an equal footing over the last thirty years. As global landscapes shift, both cities view their enduring, active link as a reliable anchor for broader Germany-China relations.
