India Mental Health Alliance elevates lived experience in care reform

Ahead of World Mental Health Day, the India Mental Health Alliance is pushing to integrate personal survivor narratives into the core of national healthcare policy. Representing 400 organizations across 30 states, the network argues that clinical expertise must merge with the firsthand realities of those navigating India’s mental health systems.

Founded in 2023, the alliance has spent two years mobilizing 3,380 professionals across 135 cities to bridge the gap between academic research and community-based needs. Dr. Kavita Arora, a founding cohort member, emphasizes that these narratives provide essential context for how services function within India's diverse social landscape. The organization is now formalizing this approach through a collaborative Knowledge Hub, designed to unify practitioner insights, field lessons, and clinical data.

To mark the shift, the alliance released 'Homecoming: Mental Health Journeys of Resilience, Healing & Wholeness,' an anthology featuring 11 women sharing accounts of depression, PTSD, and intergenerational trauma. By highlighting these stories, the alliance aims to transform mental health from a clinical concern into a central developmental priority, ensuring that policy design reflects the actual experiences of vulnerable communities rather than just theoretical models.
