The company’s previous attempt to reclaim the mobile market, the 2024 Copilot Plus PC initiative, relied on Qualcomm silicon and targeted the MacBook Air. Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Surface, admits that earlier hardware lacked the raw power to contend with Apple’s Pro line. The shift to Nvidia’s architecture marks a strategic pivot to resolve that performance deficit.
Microsoft bets on Nvidia to challenge the MacBook Pro
Inside a windowless, warehouse-like lab in Redmond, Microsoft engineers are stress-testing their latest hardware to ensure it finally bridges the gap to Apple’s high-end machines. The Surface Laptop Ultra arrives as the debut platform for Nvidia’s RTX Spark, a new Arm-based chip designed to disrupt the dominance of professional Windows laptops.

Nvidia began demonstrating the AI capabilities of its forthcoming chips to partners while Microsoft was still evaluating its roadmap. For Ostrum, the partnership was a logical necessity to achieve the compute levels required to compete directly with the MacBook Pro. To ensure the hardware survives this transition, the development team subjects every unit to rigorous automation, using robots to cycle buttons, subjecting components to radio wave bombardment, and conducting repeated drop tests.
