The study focused on the intravesical administration of the compound Nu-8, which successfully combated bacterial growth where vehicle control groups showed no effect. Beyond urinary tract applications, the Bisphosphocin class demonstrated in vivo efficacy against pulmonary infections in animal models, specifically targeting Acinetobacter species, P. aeruginosa, and A. fumigatus. These pathogens are frequent drivers of hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
Lakewood-Amedex Reports Positive Preclinical Data for Bisphosphocin
Sarasota-based Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics revealed new preclinical data showing its Bisphosphocin compounds achieved up to 97% inhibition of E. coli growth in rodent urinary tract models. The findings bolster the clinical-stage firm's push to address antibiotic-resistant infections through its proprietary antimicrobial platform.
CEO Kelvin Cooper emphasized the potential of the platform to address the global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis, citing the compounds' rapid action and lack of expected resistance development. The company is currently evaluating the lead candidate, Nu-3, in a Phase 2a trial for diabetic foot ulcers, with initial results slated for release in the first quarter of 2027. Researchers continue to screen candidates from the Bisphosphocin family to determine which will proceed into early clinical development for respiratory and urological indications.
