Ayres began his career as a chemistry teacher in Hillsborough County, steadily rising through the ranks to lead science departments, serve as a principal, and eventually become Deputy Superintendent. Since his appointment as Superintendent in 2023, he has overseen a massive network of 220,000 students and 24,000 employees. He maintains that his past roles are essential to his current decision-making, ensuring that the district’s policies remain grounded in the practical needs of those on the front lines.
This leadership approach has yielded measurable results, including a record 91 percent four-year graduation rate. Ayres emphasizes that success requires a delicate balance between fiscal responsibility and student development. By integrating technical colleges and industry-recognized certifications, the district provides students with viable career paths in fields like healthcare and engineering, often graduating them with little to no debt.
