HD Hyundai Debuts First Lashing-Free Container Ship

By eliminating the manual labor of securing cargo, HD Hyundai has delivered the world’s first lashing-free container ship to a French operator. This 13,000-TEU vessel replaces traditional lashing gear with extended cell guides and a specialized rooting system, marking a significant shift toward fully automated maritime logistics.

The vessel, constructed by HD Hyundai Samho, utilizes a hybrid version of the company’s proprietary lashing-free technology. By extending cell guides above the deck—a feat previously hindered by hatch cover designs—the ship accommodates cargo more efficiently. To bridge the structural gap, engineers developed a standardized portable bench, sized like a 40-foot container, which allows port cranes to handle the system using existing infrastructure. A Twistlock Rooting System further secures containers outside the primary guide areas, ensuring stability in rough seas and high winds.

This design change offers more than operational safety; it increases on-deck cargo capacity by over 10%. Sea trials conducted in September revealed that the system also dampens vibration, providing a smoother transit than ships reliant on conventional lashing bridges. Hongryeul Ryu, Senior Executive Vice President and CTO at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, stated that the company intends to scale this technology for smaller and medium-sized vessels. Having already gained international recognition at the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers, the system is positioned as a foundational element for future unmanned port and shipping operations.
