Breakthrough T1D Convenes Global Experts for Inaugural Diabetes Congress

Philadelphia will host the inaugural Breakthrough T1D Clinical & Research Congress from October 9–11, 2026. The gathering brings together researchers, clinicians, and community advocates to bridge the gap between laboratory science and real-world patient care, aiming to accelerate the development of cures for the 9.5 million people living with type 1 diabetes.

The event features over 80 scientific sessions focusing on transformative technologies, including AI, digital twins, and advanced immune profiling. Key discussions will address pressing challenges such as the global shortage of endocrinologists, the implementation of early-stage screening guidelines, and systemic access gaps in diabetes care. By centering the dialogue on both disease-modifying therapies and daily clinical implementation, the congress seeks to move beyond traditional blood sugar management.

Co-chairs Dr. Thomas Danne, Dr. Sanjoy Dutta, and Dr. Anastasia Albanese-O'Neill have assembled a diverse faculty representing more than 16 countries. Notable speakers include experts from the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford School of Medicine, and the University of Florida. According to CEO Aaron J. Kowalski, the primary objective is to align scientific innovation with the lived experiences of patients, ensuring that research breakthroughs translate into tangible improvements in care options. The congress marks a strategic pivot for the organization, formerly known as JDRF, as it attempts to unify disparate research fields—from immunology to digital health—to solve the complex autoimmune condition.
