The center’s launch arrives alongside the formation of a Cruise Executive Advisory Board, featuring presidents, CEOs, and senior leaders from across the maritime, travel distribution, and destination management spectrum. This board will bridge the gap between academic theory and industry reality, identifying high-value challenges that require rigorous, data-driven solutions. According to university president Jeanette M. Nuñez, the partnership creates a vital nexus between FIU’s multidisciplinary expertise and the economic demands of the cruise industry.
Florida International University Launches Global Cruise Excellence Center
Florida International University has inaugurated its Cruise Excellence Center, positioning the Miami-based institution as a primary academic hub for the maritime tourism sector. Led by the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the initiative aligns university research and talent development with the strategic needs of global cruise line executives.

Beyond research, the initiative focuses on creating a robust talent pipeline through enhanced curricula, specialized micro-credentials, and expanded internship programs. Michael Cheng, dean of the Chaplin School, noted that the center intends to move beyond traditional academic silos to address complex issues such as artificial intelligence, environmental responsibility, and shifting consumer demographics. Larry Pimentel, chair of the advisory board, emphasized that the collaboration is designed to be a practical, working resource rather than a purely ceremonial body, aiming to provide the industry with independent, actionable intelligence while preparing students for leadership roles in a global market.
