By pooling resources, the Alliance enables island nations to access advanced capabilities for land management, forestry, coastal monitoring, and emergency response that would otherwise remain out of reach for individual governments.
GEOSAT Joins SDG Data Alliance to Provide Satellite Imagery for 3,000 Islands
During the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Earth observation operator GEOSAT became the first European firm to join the SDG Data Alliance. The partnership aims to deploy very high-resolution satellite imagery to support development goals across 40 island states and more than 3,000 individual islands.
GEOSAT arrives with significant pedigree, recognized by the European Commission as one of only five very high-resolution satellite operators in its category. The company previously demonstrated its reach by supporting the Maldives Space Research Organisation’s Goidhoo Earth Observation Pilot in 2023. CEO Francisco Vilhena da Cunha noted that the company is already initiating pilot projects under the new mandate, focusing on climate change adaptation and sustainable development. By integrating local knowledge with satellite-derived insights, the initiative seeks to provide these vulnerable regions with the tools necessary to manage their resources effectively.
