The new turbine builds on the company’s existing Model Z platform, leveraging years of operational data and component validation. By increasing rated power and optimizing the swept-area-to-power ratio, the EN-252/16.7 is projected to lift annual energy production by 1% to 2% in gigawatt-scale projects. This gain allows developers to decrease turbine counts by roughly 10%, driving an estimated 2% to 4% reduction in the levelized cost of energy.
Christian Schrimpf, Executive Vice President of Offshore Wind at Envision, emphasized that the focus has shifted beyond mere scale to the practical translation of capacity into project reliability. To ensure longevity, the turbine undergoes rigorous testing, including 600 hours of accelerated life cycle assessments for the drivetrain. The system is also built to withstand extreme weather, capable of enduring 10-minute average wind speeds of 58.5 m/s and gusts reaching 82 m/s.
