Carbon Trade eXchange Pivots to Flat-Fee Model for Institutional Traders

For the first time in its 18-year history, the Carbon Trade eXchange is abandoning percentage-based commissions for its largest clients. The new invitation-only Corporate One account replaces variable fees with a flat rate of 10 cents per credit, targeting institutional buyers and project developers managing high-quality carbon assets at scale.

The shift marks a departure from standard membership structures that previously charged between 2% and 5% of trade value. Under the new model, CTX eliminates account-opening fees and minimum balance requirements, positioning its platform for large-volume transactions involving credits priced at US$10 per tonne or higher. The initiative coincides with New York Climate Week and is designed to provide cost predictability for banks, major corporations, and offtake brokers.

Operational efficiency remains a core focus of the transition. The platform supports T+0 settlement cycles, allowing for 24/7 electronic clearing without the need for manual paperwork. Members gain access to an in-house trading desk and the ability to retire or transfer credits directly, bypassing the complexities of external registry accounts. While the exchange has maintained a clean record with over 1 billion tonnes of CO2e offsets cleared since inception, CEO Wayne Sharpe emphasized that the objective is to redirect more capital toward project developers while simplifying the procurement process for institutional participants.
