The Eaton Fire of January 2025 destroyed 52 homes in the gated La Viña community, leaving many residents facing a complex and costly path toward reconstruction. While data from the L.A. County Recovers dashboard indicates that only about 1% of homes in Altadena have been rebuilt since the disaster, these six families utilized a streamlined, turnkey design process that allowed them to secure permits and complete construction in record time.
Richard and Julie Kang, who moved into their home on September 21, credited the collaborative approach with preventing the process from becoming overwhelming. By banding together and selecting pre-approved floorplans, the residents reduced bureaucratic delays—shrinking the initial plan-check phase from several months to under 60 days. The new structures are built to meet the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety Enhanced standards, providing increased resistance to embers and radiant heat.
