Anixa Biosciences Secures Australian Patent for Breast Cancer Vaccine
San Jose-based Anixa Biosciences has received its first Australian patent for a novel breast cancer vaccine, extending intellectual property protection through 2040. The move follows successful clinical trials and reinforces the company's global strategy to commercialize a preventive treatment for a disease that currently lacks any approved vaccine.
Clinical progress remains the foundation of this expansion. In a Phase 1 trial funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the vaccine demonstrated a strong safety profile and triggered immune responses in more than 74% of participants. The underlying technology targets human α-lactalbumin, a protein associated with lactation that is often expressed in aggressive breast cancer cells. By focusing on this "retired" protein, the vaccine aims to prime the immune system to inhibit tumor formation while sparing healthy tissue. Dr. Amit Kumar, CEO of Anixa, noted that this milestone strengthens the company's position as it seeks to scale development and navigate the global regulatory landscape.
