Lactips and SmartSolve Scale Plastic-Free Packaging Globally

A two-year collaboration between French material innovator Lactips and Ohio-based SmartSolve has matured into a global strategic partnership, bringing the world’s first 100% plastic-free, water-soluble packaging substrate to commercial scale. The joint effort aims to displace conventional plastics across the beauty, food, and beverage industries.

The partnership centers on PureNil™ 0, a flexible, printable substrate that dissolves in water without leaving microplastic residue. Approved for direct food contact, the material represents a departure from traditional packaging, moving from initial development in 2024 to mass-market availability in under two years. The companies are already planning a roadmap for future generations of bio-based materials to expand their zero-waste footprint.

SmartSolve CEO Jonathan Jakubowski emphasized that the agreement validates the commercial viability of their technology, noting that the material performs at scale where others have failed. Lactips CEO Alexis von Tschammer echoed this sentiment, framing the alliance as a vital step in their international expansion strategy. Founded in 2014, the French firm transitioned to industrial production in 2022, while SmartSolve operates from a 55,000-square-foot facility in Bowling Green, Ohio, to supply its patented, water-soluble labels and pouches.
