California Waste Solutions to Launch Curbside Battery Recycling in San José

San José residents will gain a dedicated curbside collection service for household batteries starting in early 2027, as California Waste Solutions expands its operational footprint. The initiative, modeled after a decade-long program in Oakland, aims to divert hazardous materials from regular recycling streams to improve facility safety.

The expansion arrives alongside a new five-year labor agreement between the company and Teamsters Local 350. This contract covers pay, benefits, and vacation provisions for local staff, providing a stable foundation for the upcoming service rollout. Michael Duong, president of California Waste Solutions, noted that the company prioritizes employee investment as a prerequisite for operational reliability, emphasizing that safe sorting begins at the household collection point rather than the processing plant.

While the company has integrated advanced sorting technology, including Pellenc optical systems and EverestLabs artificial intelligence, leadership maintains that these tools cannot replace the necessity of keeping volatile materials out of the commingled stream. Before the 2027 launch, the company plans to release specific guidelines regarding which battery types are eligible for curbside pickup, as certain hazardous or large rechargeable devices will continue to require specialized drop-off locations. Founded in 1992 by David Duong, the family-owned firm continues to leverage its long-standing recycling infrastructure to scale these services across Northern California.
