Snap’s $2,200 AR gamble

Sitting across a table from a Snap engineer, I played virtual dominoes by pinching digital tiles into place. This shared experience, where holograms anchor firmly to physical surfaces, marks the core promise of Snap’s upcoming Specs. Yet, after testing the hardware, the gap between a tech demo and a consumer product remains wide.

Snap’s $2,200 AR gamble

Snap has spent over five years iterating on augmented reality, moving from limited developer-only prototypes to this upcoming consumer release. The company views this hardware as a necessary pivot, an attempt to escape the confines of being a third-party app on someone else’s platform. By building their own ecosystem, they hope to define the next generation of computing.

The hardware itself is impossible to ignore. Unlike the subtle, Ray-Ban branded glasses from Meta, Snap’s latest Specs are chunky, black, and unapologetically bold. Available in 47mm and 52mm lens sizes, they scream for attention rather than blending into daily wear. With a price tag of $2,195, these glasses are positioned as a premium piece of kit. While the software creates a genuinely unique sensation of shared digital space, the physical design and the practical limitations of the current build suggest that these glasses may struggle to find an audience outside of early adopters when they ship this fall.
