The U.S. Department of Commerce has finalized a $1 billion award for Anderon, an IBM company, to scale domestic quantum wafer production. Based in Albany, New York, the firm operates a 300-millimeter pure-play foundry designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial-grade quantum computing hardware.
CEO Mukesh Khare noted that the agreement provides the requisite scale to transition quantum technology into real-world applications. The facility has already reached a critical production milestone, with initial wafer batches currently moving through the fabrication line. According to Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research, this specialized output is essential for maintaining the roadmap of quantum progress, as the industry shifts toward large-scale, reliable hardware production.
