Working within the company’s new Opera + Community Studios in Fort Point, the team moved beyond static monitors to project "supertitles" that pulse and shift in rhythm with the musical score. Rather than serving as mere utility, the text acts as a visual extension of the singers' emotions. MASARY Studios co-founder Sam Okerstrom-Lang noted that the goal was to keep viewers immersed in the performance by treating typography as a primary scenic element that performs alongside the cast.
Boston Lyric Opera Turns Subtitles into Kinetic Scenic Art
Opera translation typically forces audiences to glance away from the stage, but a new collaboration in Boston is changing that dynamic. By integrating animated, emotion-driven typography directly into the set design, the Boston Lyric Opera and MASARY Studios have transformed functional text into a core element of the performance.
To achieve this, the production relied on Epson large venue 4K 3-chip 3LCD laser projectors. The technical setup included two projectors converged for a single image and a third 10,000-lumen EB-PQ2010W unit fitted with an ultra-short-throw snorkel lens to power a rear-projected window on stage. This flexibility allowed the design team to warp and fine-tune imagery via browser-based tools, even when unexpected physical obstacles like HVAC units forced last-minute rigging adjustments. By combining precise projection technology with custom animation, the collaboration effectively bridges the gap between traditional storytelling and modern visual art.
