Meta pivots to camera-free smart glasses to dodge privacy backlash

Facing mounting scrutiny over surreptitious recording and public bans, Meta is pivoting its wearable strategy. Reports suggest the company will unveil a camera-free version of its smart glasses, codenamed Luna, at next week’s Meta Connect event to distance its hardware from the privacy controversies plaguing its current flagship models.

The new frames prioritize voice interaction over visual capture. By removing the camera, engineers have slimmed the device’s arms to resemble standard eyewear. Instead of optics, the glasses house six microphones for direct interaction with Meta AI and the Muse agent, alongside built-in speakers. Meta intends to ship these units in October, offering both Clubmaster and Burbank styles.

This shift arrives as Meta’s existing camera-equipped glasses struggle with a severe reputation crisis. Critics and bad actors have exploited the recording features to harass others, leading to widespread prohibitions in sensitive areas, including New York courtrooms and major British pub chains. While Meta maintains that its recording LED is a safeguard, users have frequently discovered workarounds to bypass the light, fueling a persistent cat-and-mouse game between the company and privacy advocates. Alongside the camera-free Luna, the company is expected to debut Phoenix, an augmented reality headset designed to project virtual workspaces and media displays.
