Trip.com Group Posts Second Quarter Loss Following Anti-Monopoly Penalty

Trip.com Group reported a net loss of RMB 2.4 billion for the second quarter of 2026, a sharp reversal from the previous year's profit. The decline was triggered by a massive RMB 5.2 billion anti-monopoly penalty imposed by the State Administration for Market Regulation, overshadowing growth in core travel segments.

Despite the regulatory financial hit, the company maintained a resilient operational performance, with total net revenue reaching RMB 15.7 billion, a 6% increase year-over-year. International business proved to be a primary growth engine, with platform revenue surging over 50% compared to the same period in 2025. Inbound travel also saw significant double-digit gains, suggesting a robust appetite for global tourism services despite macro pressures like geopolitical volatility and energy costs.

Executive Chairman James Liang emphasized that the company is doubling down on its 'G2' strategy—Globalization and Great Quality—while integrating proprietary AI tools to refine the traveler experience. Stripping away the one-time anti-monopoly fine, the company’s underlying profitability remains stable; net income would have reached RMB 2.7 billion. Looking forward, management continues to prioritize disciplined execution and the expansion of lifestyle offerings to offset recent headwind-driven declines in transportation ticketing revenue.
